If you've ever raised a puppy or young dog, you have probably witnessed first-hand some of the rapid change and growth that our dogs are capable of. Those of us who have had a puppy know all too well that our cute, cuddly, fluffy new friends can also contribute to a lot of sleepless nights through crate training and redirecting your exploratory friend's new obsession with chewing on the sofa. Understanding your dog's developmental timeline can help us to understand their behavior and motivation in each stage, as well as help us to know what to expect!
From birth to senior stage, your doggie is constantly learning and growing. As newborn (Neonatal) puppies, they are capable of imprinting positive associations with gentle, intermittent handling. As they grow through the first few weeks, they begin to learn puppy play, socialization and bite inhibition with their littermates and mother. By the time you come along to give them the loving home they've always wanted, they're little sponges - soaking up every experience, interaction and lesson that comes their way.
All of that can seem very overwhelming; especially if you're either a first-time puppy owner, or you've not raised a puppy in many years. That's where a positive trainer can come in to help!! Setting yourself up for success by booking a trainer early on help you to get a head start on appropriate socialization, building a lexicon of behaviors you'd like to see in your puppy, and can help them to grow into a well-balanced best friend.
